Andrea Frierson

PLAYWRIGHT, ACTOR, SINGER

Andrea Frierson is a two-time Helen Hayes Award nominee, and the author and star of me & ella (54 Below, NYC, and various theaters throughout the U.S.).  On Broadway, she has had the pleasure of working with directors Graciela Daniele, Julie Taymor, George C. Wolfe, and Oz Scott in the following productions: Once on This Island (Erzulie, Goddess of Love, original cast); Marie Christine (with Audra McDonald) and Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass (The Mother), both at Lincoln Center Theater; Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk ('Da Singer); The Lion King (Rafiki); For Colored Girls... (U/S original Broadway production), amongst others.  

Regionally, Andrea has performed in productions at the Shakespeare Theatre Company, the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Arena Stage, the Studio Theatre, Hartford Stage Company, and South Coast Repertory. On television, she appeared in an Emmy Award-winning episode of Louie, and most recently on an episode of The Americans (Season 3), both on FX.  In the mid-eighties Andrea was a five-time female vocalist champion and semi-finalist on the then popular syndicated TV series, Star Search, and later was a series regular and staff writer on the Nickelodeon TV series, Allegra's Window.

As a writer, her first play with music, Lady Be Good, was produced by Lincoln Center Theatre in a five-day workshop.  Her musical, Soon of a Mornin'- about the Depression-era quilters and tenant farming community of Gee's Bend, Alabama- was an invited show in the NYMF Festival and ran at the Lions Theatre in Theatre Row. 

Andrea is a Library of Congress award winner in Ethnographic Research (2005), a former Dramatists Guild Fellow (Lyricist/Librettist, 2008) and current member, and was a member of the BMI Musical Theatre Songwriter's Workshop (Lyricist).

Andrea studied acting with Michael Kahn, among others, and is a graduate of the Academy for Classical Acting.
