It's Our Birthday!
On January 24th, 2013, 40+ theatre artists packed into one small studio living room and started Articulate Theatre Company. We knew we were facing a big challenge, but we also knew that we were up to that challenge. Directors, designers, actors, producers, musicians, playwrights, administrators - we had all the pieces needed to start out strong. And we did!
By the end of our 3rd year, we had two plays, two benefit productions, a night celebrating the awesome Circle Rep Theatre, over 25 monthly Salon nights, and several special events under our belt. So, what's next? Join us for our next Articulating the Arts and find out! |

My favorite memory with Articulate is at our Circling Back event. Hearing Circle Rep members, particularly Marshall W. Mason, talk about getting their company off the ground was inspiring. Embracing new playwrights, doing edgy, ground-breaking work that stands the test of time is all an actor can hope for.

I think my favorite event at Articulate is going on in the lead role of Mrs. Antrobus in The Skin of our Teeth after an 11am phone call from Cat, due to an emergency situation. We ran the scenes at 3pm and performed in the show at 7pm. Played the role for four performances. Had a great time! This was due in large part to the trust built up in our company, as a result of having worked together so often.

Looking forward to Articulate's future! My wish for us is solvency and recognition without giving up one ounce of professionalism or creativity! This picture explains how I feel about this group: me feeling the Good Stretch that is Articulate!

I have loved what we've done so far, but I'm hoping to someday (soon) be housed in our own theatre, and known for our quality of work, our writers, actors, directors, a hotbed of talent, a bedrock of not just NY theatre, but known nationally; and for bringing theatre alive and keeping the magic of theatre going into the next generation and the next and the next.

I loved creating, with director Cat Parker, a kind of time-traveling, intense but absinthe-made-the-mind-grow-fonder Vincent in Russell Lees's Van Gogh Gives a TED Talk at our second Articulating the Arts. The process was fun, I got to know the esteemed ginger Cat, and audiences dug the piece!

In a world where theatre seems to be dying off in favor of multi-media, non-live work, it’s nice that someone still cares enough about the true art, to work for and with a live audience, thus infusing our audiences and artists with an emotional reconnect.

As a founding member, I have so many wonderful memories of our first years - from the magical first read-through of The Skin of Our Teeth with our amazing production team and cast, to sitting on the "other" side of the audition table for Dragon auditions. Fascinating! Working with the Articulate ensemble has made me realize how important a "home" with other artists is in NYC is. It makes the hardest parts of being a performer easier.

Such an exciting 3 years. One of my favorite moments was watching and hearing the audience’s reaction as they fell in love with Jill Bianchini’s character from "The Virgin” in our first Articulating the Arts. I have big hopes for our future, too. I want our work to be so solid and so well done that it gets public recognition and wins awards every year. That we win the lottery, and buy our own theatre LOL (It could happen)! This group has taught me so much: to just keep doing your thing no matter what; to not let disappointments, negative opinions and obstacles stand in your way; that when your work is presented in front of the right people good things can happen. Surround yourself with hard working like minded people. I love all of the Articulate ensemble, they are my theatrical family. It takes a village, as Hillary would say.

I have big hopes and dreams for Articulate - primarily to have a permanent, established theater space that showcases and represents the goals and dreams of the Articulate Theatre Company. From that home base, a school that embraces what Articulate is about from writing to performing and everything in between as well as an ongoing theatre season featuring original works generated from within the Articulate Company.

As a new member to the group, I love the kindness and willingness of the other members to accept me into the fold, and I look forward to the Salons and other meetings, where I'm getting to know everybody better. I've learned that Articulate is filled with talents of all kinds -- the full range of what's needed to mount successful, professional productions: from writers, to set, lighting and costume designers, directors, as well as actors, of course. The more I get to know people in the troupe, the more I'm impressed at the scope of talent. My biggest dream is for Articulate to present full-scale productions more often throughout the year. But truth-be-told, Articulate has already surpassed my dreams. I feel privileged to be part of such an amazing group. My confidence has been very positively impacted; being cast in the upcoming Articulating the Arts has done wonders for making me feel even more at home. Working with an ensemble has been great -- I've worked with many musicians (and several bands) over the years; never have I been made to feel more welcome and appreciated. It's been a fun learning experience, and it's my sincere belief that things will only get better as our group and repertoire grows.

I love working with the Articulate ensemble. We have a lot of different talents in our group, and that's made me consider trying different things, like possibly directing. The company and the people really have inspired me. Working with such talented people makes me push myself harder!

As a newer member of ATC, I'm excited to see what the future holds for this ensemble. Our last event, Circling Back, showed how art, at its root, is about connection. I can't wait to see the ways in which ATC will continue to connect audiences and artists to our world.

Marguerite Forrest (actor)
My biggest dream for Articulate is fostering and developing works by our writers, and then producing those works within our company. This will help our writers to grow in their writing as well as growing our following as a company, with our wonderful company artist written and produced productions.

Amazing what can be accomplished when a group of people say "YES" and dive in! Articulate Theatre Company has greatly enriched my life by giving me an artistic home, a showcase for my talent, and a wonderful connection to a creative group of fun and talented individuals. Congratulations to us on reaching our third anniversary as a vibrant, cohesive, collaborative, award-winning theatre company!

When I was first invited to do a reading for Articulate by director, Katrin Hilbe, I was flattered and had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. When I was then invited to join the group I was a little curious, but not expecting to get involved. Eventually I came to appreciate that ATC has an unusual membership of multi-talented people, proficient in many different aspects of theater and film, all propelled by the drive and ability of our very special Artistic Director, Cat Parker. I feel especially fortunate to be part of a group that lives on after a production is over, somewhat like a repertory company, which is very hard to find in today's theater world. Our future looks very bright!

Victoria Medina (playwright, actor, producer)
I have so many wonderful memories, but if I have to pick one it would be Circling Back. The memory of sharing the stage with my fellow ATC members and the legendary performers, writers, producers and designers from the Circle Repertory Company is still magical. This is only the beginning. I look forward to when we can have consistent full productions where all the talents in the group will be featured. Articulate is a great place to explore, experiment and grow, a place to be surrounded by people who care and wish for everyone to succeed.

Imran W. Sheikh (actor)
My dream for Articulate is to be a household name for theatre-goers and theatre-makers. A home and gold-standard for people to create and tell stories old and new. And for people to come and see those stories, leaving wiser, thoughtful, and entertained.

God, I'm a dancer! A dancer, dances . . . play me the music, give me the chance to come thru . . . "Cassie's" words in A Chorus Line continue to ring in my head even though I left dance behind years ago. Today, Articulate Theatre Company has become the music giving each of us the opportunity to come thru -- if we're open to doing the work. I'm new to the company and ever since I put myself on their line last fall, doing a monologue as my introduction to the company, I felt the support of something bigger than any of us. Maybe a little like walking into the room that fateful night when A Chorus Line was born? But, even though I carry the legacy of "Kristine," I never got to do the real work to create her. I am loving doing the work with Articulate. I've been impressed with their production values since I saw their very first project, Dragon in 2013. It was only last year when my life opened up enough to allow taking on the responsibility of joining and working with a repertory company. From doing a simple monologue in front of the company to performing at Circling Back to a packed house honoring Circle Rep, each and every experience has been a surprisingly joyful experience. Happy Anniversary to a wonderful team of playwrights, actors, directors, designers and, of course, Mama Cat! None of us know where it will go, but just look at how far we've come. A very happy anniversary to us all!
